For the season-long radio documentary “Hockey Diaries: Change The Game”, Washington Capitals head coach Bruce Boudreau recorded a diary entry in early Dec 2010 about the emotion of trading forward Tomas Fleischmann to the Colorado Avalanche.  (Fleischmann is now under contract with the Florida Panthers.)

At the end of the 2010-11 regular season, goaltender Braden Holtby sat down to talk about what it was like to work with goaltending coach Dave Prior. He talked about Prior’s coaching philosophies and approach, and what he’s learned from him in his career so far.

The interview was recorded as part of the independent multimedia series "Hockey Diaries". The latest documentary, Change The Game, chronicles the Washington Capitals 2010-2011 season through the eyes of Holtby, forward Matt Hendricks, and head coach Bruce Boudreau. You can listen to (or download) the piece on the Washington Capitals website, and follow us for more material and project updates.

Thanks for listening to their story, and please let us know what you think and help spread the word. We’ll be releasing audio and video outtakes, additional diary entries and pictures all week — follow us for details.
And we’re preparing for the 2011-12 season right now — more news on that as soon as we have anything to share.

In this outtake from the Washington Capitals locker room, hear what St. Cloud graduate Andrew Gordon thought when he heard fellow alum Matt Hendricks had been invited to training camp for the 2010-2011 season, one year ago. And in this year’s Hockey Diaries documentary, premiering Monday 9/19, you’ll hear what Hendricks thought about competing with Gordon for a job.

Where to listen: The hour-long documentary Hockey Diaries: Change The Game, featuring the season-long diaries of Matt Hendricks, Braden Holtby and Bruce Boudreau, will debut live on Monday 9/19 at 6-7pmET on NHL XM 92. Starting Tuesday, you’ll be able to hear the piece online on the Caps website.

Also on Monday 9/19, at around 8:40am, we’ll be talking to Mike Ross on NHL XM 92 about the making of the piece. And on The Power Play NHL XM 92 between 5:30 and 6:00pm, Bruce Boudreau and Matt Hendricks will talk about their Hockey Diaries experiences. Hope you get a chance to listen.

For the multimedia project Hockey Diaries, Washington Capitals forward Matt Hendricks sat down early in the 2010-11 season (it was November — check out his Movember charity moustache!) to talk about making it to the NHL. “It was always about the NHL for me. It was never about ‘I want to be in the American League’. That was never my dream.” The hour-long radio documentary “Hockey Diaries: Change The Game” will debut on NHL Home Ice on XM/Sirius on September 19 from 6-7pmET. Follow us on twitter for more details about listening online, as soon as we have them.

Hockey Diaries audio bonanza

We’ve just posted “Hockey Diaries: The Almost Season” to our listening site at www.mediachameleon.org.  Length is 59-minutes, and you can listen to it online or download it as an mp3, whatever works for you.  We’ve also added a bunch of audio clips for each player – six each from Mike Knuble and Tyler Sloan, the two main storytellers in the piece.  (Just too many stories, moments and memories to fit into the documentary itself!)

If you have any questions or suggestions for Hockey Diaries, post them here on our blog, or just DM us on twitter (@mediachameleon) and we’ll get back to you.  Thanks for listening.

friday night lights, mics, action

We’re excited that “Hockey Diaries: The Almost Season” will debut for NHL Radio this Friday night, September 10, at the XM studios in Washington DC.  It’ll be on XM204, and on NHL.com — the hour long piece, bookended by some Q&A discussion with both of us producers (sorry!) and others still TBA (much more interesting!).  7pm-9pmET.  We’ll tweet (@mediachameleon) and post here as soon as we have the details confirmed.  Hope you’ll get a chance to listen somewhere and let us know what you think…

september 10 air date

So… it’s September.  And our 2009-2010 Hockey Diaries piece hasn’t aired yet (sorry @stonyglenrider, we missed your birthday month!).  But the good news is that we *do* have an air-date confirmed now.  Please help spread the word… "Hockey Diaries: The Almost Season" will premiere on Friday, September 10, on NHL Radio.  And on some public radio stations after that.  As soon as we have details about air times (and where to listen online if you miss it live), we’ll post that info here.   Tonight we’re delivering the final mix, plus some short promo clips, to the NHL Radio team.   We’re sitting here listening to the mix one last time before we ftp it.  It’s funny how, with anything creative, there are always 1,000+ ways to write or sculpt or paint or mix or frame something, right?  So many different directions that you can go in...  And no matter how many hundreds of hours you spend on trying to get something just right, you always think back about what you could have differently.  But it’s done, and it’s a strong story, told by passionate people, and there are thoughts and scenes and sounds that we hope will connect you with the story when you listen – whether you’re a Caps fan, or a hockey fan, or just a sports fan.  We’re looking forward to hearing your feedback.  We’re also going to post some bonus audio and photographs here on our tumblr each day from now until Sept 10, so please keep checking back often… and let us know what you think!
